We Are The Fury

Infinite Jest (2006)

Can you say garage rock? Infinite Jest, the five-song EP from We Are the fury, is rock and roll at its finest. This mellow mix is catchy and creative; right from the get-go, the band grabs and pulls you in for a short, yet appealing CD. They describe themselves as “70’s glam fucking quirky post punk,” and this definition fits their style perfectly. You listen to this album and can just picture the never-ending beer bottles, cigarettes sticking out of guitar necks and a different girl every night; rock and roll, baby.

The first track, “Better off This Way” is extremely catchy and way up-beat. The lyrics are both creative and easy to remember; the bridge in the first song, for example, consists of a ride bell, a clean guitar and scatting. How can you not like scatting? I personally think that the first song on any CD should grab the listener by the ears so that they pay attention to the whole album, and “Better off This Way” does just that. This album reminds me of The Strokes and The Kinison mixed in one; the tracks are simple garage rock style, but have very cool transitions from chorus to verse, from bridge to finale. The band mixes things up by adding a keyboard to their line-up, and this gives the album a very relaxed sound.

The guitar riffs on Infinite Jest, along with the vocals, are what make the album so damn catchy. For example, “Nation, Forgive Us” starts off with a simple drum beat and a groovy guitar riff that you can just see the guitar player getting into when playing it live.

What I didn’t really like was the singer’s voice on “Parody at the Masquerade”; I don’t know what it was, but the chorus of that song just pissed me off. The lyrics and the music during that part just sounded very annoying. However, this makes no difference, as the four out of five tracks on this album are very catchy and solid.

My personal favorites off this CD are “Better off This Way,” “Anesthetic Parade,” and “Nation, Forgive Us.” Calling three songs out of five your favorites is pretty good; the last track is great as well, but these three are the ones that are the most memorable to me. This album is accessible by anyone and everyone. It is easy to listen to, at only five tracks, and I was into it after just my first listen-through. Actually, I think it’s safe to say that I was into it after the first song, as it is probably the most effective on the whole album.

We Are the Fury is doing a US tour as you read this, and they seem to be gaining some popularity throughout North America. I see this band getting to be quite admired. They need to change up their song style in the future just a bit so as to not get too repetitive, because honestly, who likes to listen to a band’s second album and have it sound exactly as the first? I give Infinite Jest 7.8 pantyhose/cigarette butts/beer caps out of 10.  [ END ]
