Album Review
Slipknot
9.0: Live (2005)
By just putting this CD into your player you will be subjected to total chaos. Slipknot’s new release captures their raw power and never-ending energy on a self-produced two disc, 24 track CD. The album covers the nine member band’s music from each of their three studio releases and there never seems to be a dull moment; just mind numbing entertainment. One great aspect of this recent release is that if you have never been to a Slipknot show in your life this CD makes you feel as if you were actually present at one.
I have never been a fan of live CD’s, but since I had a chance to see Slipknot in concert I thought I would give this one a chance. As soon as the first song came on I felt as if I was back in the stands at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada screaming like it was my last day on the planet. The transition between the songs is smooth as a baby’s ass even though they were in a different city for almost each and every song. The album is a compilation of their recent US tour which should have made it even harder to produce because they had to carefully choose certain songs from their expansive and ever changing sets. However, this is not the case.
Corey (the lead singer) also known as no. 8, gets the crowd more riled up then K-Mart shoppers during a blue light special. Mick and James blast out powerful riffs on their guitars and Joey beats on his drums so hard and fast that it is as if he was a priest beating the devil out his set. Unfortunately the effectiveness and insane antics of the other percussionists in Slipknot, such as beating kegs with baseball bats and their ability to climb almost anything, is lost on this live CD. Nevertheless, Slipknot delivers a high caliber live metal CD worthy of any fan’s collection.
If you have never listened to Slipknot before I would not recommend starting off with this CD, but perhaps with their second release Iowa or their latest release Vol. 3 The Subliminal Verses. Songs such as “Before I Forget” and “Left Behind” should leave even the greatest metal fan awe struck. The only complaint I have for the CD is that at certain times Corey’s lyrics are barely comprehensible but I guess this is to be sort of expected with any live CD. As a drummer, my favorite track was the eleventh track on the first CD. Joey has a five minute drum solo that would stop any percussionist dead in their tracks. Joey teases his fans with his insane speed, intense fills and incredible control of his hands and feet. The bottom line is if you are not a Slipknot fan by now, you should be. Don’t be afraid to get your feet wet and lose some of your hearing… go check out this CD! [ END ]
